Cheikha Rimitti was a Ra'i singer who sang in the traditional Ra'i style beginning in the 1940's. Her music was condemned for being crude, but she eventually gained international popularity. Despite her success, she remained illiterate for her entire life.

Cheb Khaled was the first Ra'i singer to achieve international success. His 1993 single "Didi" was immensely popular across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. In recent years, he has dropped the title "Cheb," and his music has become more world pop than Ra'i.

Rachid Taha is a modern Algerian artist who plays what he describes as a fusion of Ra'i and punk. He has also achieved international success and recognition. His track "Tekitoi" speaks to the aftermath of September 11th, 2001 in the Arab world and the continued tension for many Algerians between Algerian and French identities.
